Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, PROJECTIONS brings together 35+ photographers, editors, and visual journalists whose images documented the attacks and shaped how the world understood them.

Across six nights, photographers who covered the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, Shanksville, and the White House will share firsthand accounts of that extraordinary day and its aftermath.

PROJECTIONS is a live platform for the presentation and critical discussion of photography. Over the past eight years, more than 400 photographers — from emerging voices to renowned photojournalists — have shared their work, ideas, and processes with engaged audiences.

More than a showcase, PROJECTIONS is a forum for dialogue: a space where images are interrogated, narratives unpacked, and photography’s role as witness, critique, and connective tissue is brought to the fore.

The work presented has included searing testimony from history’s front lines: evidence of war crimes in Ukraine, visual accounts of displacement and resistance, and intimate portrayals of besieged communities.

By foregrounding the voices of photographers themselves, PROJECTIONS bridges art and audience, cultivating not just appreciation but civic engagement. It affirms photography as both a creative medium and a critical instrument of empathy, inquiry, and justice in a fractured world.

SPECIAL

At critical junctures, certain events demand sustained attention. PROJECTIONS Special Edition responds with weeklong programs — 5 to 8 curated presentations devoted to a single urgent issue.

Through the perspectives of photojournalists, artists, and storytellers, these editions offer depth beyond headlines: from the war in Ukraine, where over 80 presentations have borne witness to atrocities and resilience, to explorations of reproductive rights, gun violence, and the global impact of COVID-19.

Past editions have also featured White House photographers, including Pulitzer Prize winners, providing rare insight into the visual record of power and history.

Please join us Wednesday, September 30th at PROJECTIONS for a thoughtful evening as we showcase the work of Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Kitagaki.

Paul has spent a lifetime documenting war, disaster, injustice and resilience across the globe—from Iraq under Saddam Hussein to earthquake-ravaged Mexico City to 12 Olympic Games and beyond. A Pulitzer Prize–winning visual journalist, his work is defined by a commitment to preserving powerful human stories. Kitagaki’s deeply personal project, “Gambatte! Legacy of an Enduring Spirit,” revisits the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II—an experience that included his own family, who were photographed by Dorothea Lange. Pairing historic images with present-day portraits, the work led to his book, “Behind Barbed Wire: Searching for Japanese Americans Incarcerated During World War II,” continuing his mission to preserve memory and history.

This promises to be a provocative night of photography.

For over three decades, I have championed photographers as curator, collector, and advocate — producing acclaimed campaigns, exhibitions, publications, and editorial projects.

Through mentorship and pragmatic guidance, I support emerging voices in navigating the complexities of a creative career. Collaborations with institutions such as Syracuse University, Parsons, the New School, ICP, and SVA reflect my commitment to sustaining a dynamic photographic community.

As a juror and nominator for honors including the Xposure Global Focus Project, the Lucies and Critical Mass I work to recognize and elevate photography’s most resonant voices, affirming its role as a vital instrument of culture, inquiry, and change.
